Creation narrative (Genesis)
Bible event
English: Creation account in Genesis
Primeval history · Ussher: 4004 BCE
Genesis begins with God creating the heavens and the earth, forming light, land, living creatures, and humankind. In English this is usually called the Creation narrative or Creation account. Jewish and Christian tradition receive it as the true beginning of all things; traditional chronologies count the genealogies back to an early date, such as Archbishop Ussher's 4004 BCE, and the Jewish calendar counts its years from creation (3761 BCE).
The account introduces key biblical themes: God as Creator, human dignity, Sabbath rest, and the goodness of creation. Later prophets and New Testament writers return to these opening chapters when they speak about God, humanity, and new creation.

Tradition note
Biblical dates follow traditional biblical chronology (for example 1 Kings 6:1 for the Exodus), with Jewish tradition noted where it differs. Expanded English explanations summarize what happened and why it matters.
